The Main Register encompasses Merchant Vessels, Commercial Yachts and Pleasure Yachts. It records titles and offers the facility to register a mortgage against a vessel.
The following persons (legal and natural) are qualified to own a Manx ship under
section 2 of the Merchant Shipping Registration Act 1991.
1. NATURAL PERSONS
1.1 BRITISH CITIZENS
People connected with the Isle of Man, United Kingdom and Channel Islands.
Principal means of acquisition are by birth of a parent who is a British Citizen
or settled, or if the first generation born abroad from a British citizen parent.
1.2 BRITISH DEPENDENT TERRITORY CITIZENS (BDTC)
People connected with the dependencies below. Arrangements for acquiring
and transmitting BDTC status are broadly parallel with those for British

St Helena and Dependencies
Sovereign Base Areas of AKROTIRI and DHEKELIA
Turks and Caicos Islands
1.3 BRITISH OVERSEAS CITIZENS
Citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies who do not have the above
connections with either the United Kingdom or the dependencies.
1.4 BRITISH SUBJECTS (under The British Nationality Act 1981)
People who on 31st December 1982 were:-
(i) a British subject without citizenship, that is a person who was a British
subject on 31st December 1948 who did not subsequently become a
citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies, a citizen of a
Commonwealth Country, a citizen of Pakistan or a citizen of the
Republic of Ireland; or
(ii) a British subject by virtue of having made a claim under section 2
of the British Nationality Act 1948, which enabled a person who was
a citizen of Eire and a British subject on 31st December 1948 to
claim on certain grounds to have remained a British subject; or
(iii) a British subject by registration under the British Nationality Act
1965 : these are persons who are registered as British subjects
on the basis of their marriage to a British subject.
1.5 BRITISH NATIONALS (OVERSEAS) (under The Hong Kong (British
Nationality) Act 1986)
Held exclusively by people who are British dependent Territories
citizens by virtue of a connection with Hong Kong.
1.6 MEMBER STATES OF THE EUROPEAN UNION & EEA
By virtue of the Merchant Shipping (Relevant Countries) Regulations 1994
which came into force on the 1st July 1994, the Member States of the
European Union and other states party to the EEA are added to those
States whose citizens and companies are permitted to register ships on the
Manx Register as follows:-

2. BODIES CORPORATE
Bodies Corporate incorporated in the Isle of Man, United Kingdom, Channel
Islands, the European Union and EEA (see paragraph 1.6) and the Dependent
Territories (see paragraph 1.2) are qualified owners.
3. PRESCRIBED RELEVANT COUNTRIES
The following are prescribed as relevant countries for the purposes of section
2(1)(f), 2(1)(ff) and 2(1)(g) of the Act:
